Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child

So, at a recent work meeting, we watched a webcast about how to raise an emotionally intelligent child. Honestly, I absolutely loved it! It made me think, although it is a little early, that this would be a a great way to [attempt to] raise a child.

I decided to create a completely different blog to share all the little tidbits I learn from work meetings and from working with children. My other blog will just be for family happenings ...

Dr. John Gottman, the lecturer in the webcast who is the nation's foremost researcher in relationships and parenting talks about four steps to Emotional Health

1. Acknowledge the emotion
2. Show empathy
3.Communicate values
4. Set limits

We need to strive for emotional moments and communicate through them. By doing this we are illustrating the ability to:

-think for yourself
-question the 'status quo'
-be compassionate by having a value system and 'good' relations
-be proud, not boastful
-have a sense of purpose, understand ethics and have mutual respect for all

It's about 30 minutes long with audience questions after. Definitely worth a watch!
